Renting an Apartment in Finland: A Practical Checklist
What to prepare, check at a viewing, and confirm in a Finnish rental agreement before moving into your new home.

Prepare a complete application
Popular rentals can move quickly. Prepare identification, contact information, proof of income or studies, references when available, and a short introduction. State who will live in the home, your preferred move-in date, and whether you have pets. Only share sensitive documents through a trustworthy channel.
Inspect the home and total cost
At the viewing, check windows, ventilation, water fixtures, appliances, storage, mobile coverage, and signs of moisture. Ask what the rent includes and confirm separate costs such as water, electricity, parking, internet, sauna, and insurance. Check public transport and everyday services at the time you would normally use them.
Read the agreement before paying
Confirm whether the agreement is fixed-term or valid until further notice, the notice period, rent review terms, deposit amount, payment date, and rules for pets or smoking. Make sure the landlord and address match the verified details. Record the apartment condition with dated photos and agree in writing how keys and the deposit will be handled.
